1974-78 Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Strathclyde. Graduated with BSc with first class honours
1978-79 Chemical Engineer at Scottish Agricultural Industries, Edinburgh. Worked on technical support in a fertiliser factory (Nitric and Phosphoric acid plants, Ammonium Nitrate and compound fertiliser plants)
1979-80 Research Assistant with the Production Engineering Department at Strathclyde, based in John G. Kincaid in Greenock (they used to make diesel engines for ships). Project involved integrating quality and production control systems.
1980-83 Chemical Engineer in the R&D Department at BNFL Windscale. Worked on the development of the head-end plant of THORP (Thermal oxide reprocessing plant).
1983-86 Software Engineer in the Systems Engineering Group at BNFL Windscale. One of two software engineers on site looking after existing SCADA systems and developing new ones.
1986-Present Lecturer, then Senior lecturer in the Chemical Engineering Department at Strathclyde.
1991 PhD in Chemical Engineering, taken while a member of staff.
1992(six months) Visiting lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley. I taught their undergraduate process control course and did a bit of research and software development work (we were developing a piece of software to help teach process control).
1997-2000 Managing Director of Process Cybernetics Ltd. This was a company we spun off some research we were doing. It involved myself, some PhD students and some others. We won a John Logie Baird award for innovation and a Scottish Office SMART award. Lack of sales and a disagreement with the University over IP rights led to the company being dissolved.
